Questions of Super 8 Cross-Media Study

QUESTION 1 :  How the industry promotes film to audiences?

Firstly a method of promotion is through print, which includes : billboards, newspapers, posters,  magazines etc this is traditionally the oldest form of promotion and has more speific loyal followers who may be a more older audience who are not into more modern technology. However print can be seen in everyday world as billboards and posters are eye catching and have to be taken a glimpse at.
Another way of promotion is through broadcasting which is easy as it is a daily part of everyones routines it can be shown on talk shows, cinema and premiers and. Most preferably the tv ads are perfect for todays busy fast paced lifestlye, it is worldwide for audiences and can reach almost any home therefore targeting a more family audience.
And lastly their is e-media for the more modern generation , emedia includes social networking such as twitter and facebook allowing audiences world wide to interact, discuss and find out about the film and cast etc there are official movie and production websites, blogs and online games/ in this case a online interactive super 8 trailer. This is all targetting a more younger audience who use e-media more regualrly
Key issues :
Print-  these include how traditional and old fashioned it is, also the money of subscription monthly for magazines and etc is not seen ecomomically efficient as you can find and read the same information for free online and even on your mobile device.
Tv is dying- another issue as critics think now people prefer watching online and with the new (sky+) the whole scheduling program has now changed as audiences no longer wait to watch a program or talkshow etc as they can now record it and watch it whenever they want. However on the other hand tv and broadcasting has tried to catch up with e-media and technology with moving ahead with the HD and 3D tv's allowing a whole new experiance and completly different audience gratifications in contrast to print and e-media
Emedia-  no police -and too much piracy illegal downloading of movies is just corrupting the film industry and therefore giving the industry a huge loss in their movie, it is a hard accpect to control as the web has now expanded hugely making it impossible to track down or stop it. However it has huge profit and promotional implications as social networking increases audience participation and allows audiences to have a voice and interaction unlike the other two methods.

QUESTION 2
How are texts in the three platforms constructed?

Language and the codes and conventions for each platform : Print media will give a review of Super 8,information about the cast, certificate, etc. and will often include an interview with a star/director - This is shown in a Guardian newspaper review of super 8 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/aug/04/super-8-review which talked about all aspects of the cast, certificate For example  : Production year: 2011 ,Country: USA, Cert (UK): 12A

Runtime: 112 mins ,Directors: JJ Abrams Cast: Amanda Michalka, Elle Fanning, , Joel Courtney .. etc
therir was also a interview within the newspaper their was a interview with the director JJ Abrams who explains what it was like to work with the man who inspired him to make movies – and why he's proud to be a geek.
Radio and TV will usually offer an exclusive interview with cast and directors etc and allows us to view them outside of their movie persona/ character for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWTHM6CzPlc&feature=related the interview with the kids who star in the movie as the main roles. During the interview we get to see a whole different side to their personalities and we as audiences can relate more to them .
E-Media will be instant offering interaction with a range of video clips, blogs, audio, articles and competitions this is shown through the cast's and movie social networking sites - Facebook/ Twitter which allows instant messaging and updates for the starts to update allowing audiences to be up to date with the latest info on the movie E media will also include exclusive video clips, blogs, articles and competitions etc about the movie that cannot be seen throught print or broadcasting media for example on the official website it has an editing room which includes exclusive clips from the movie that are unvailable to be seen on tv-broadcasting media.

Similarities and differences of how Super 8 is being promoted
Sim = - Trailers - on  Broadcats and Emedia

Dif = - Interactive Trailer online
Sim = Print and Emedia - Comic book spin off
Sim = Interviews with cast/directors = Emedia and Broadcasting and Print
Diff = Audiences able to interact through Emedia
Some platforms better than other - Emedia - newest form, worldwide , no cost , intreractivity, latest/updated information, easy accessable etc..

OUESTION 3
How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?

Super 8 TA - and how ?
Primary = Young children, SocioClass - E , Ages - 12+  the  cast of all younger actors will make it easier to identify with younger audiences also the special effects and story plot of a scary alien will intrigue younger audiences to go watch it . Secondary audeinces = Older Audiences who may have seen pervious Spielburg movies and see the homage as a tribute and a reminder of their old childhood intrests and who have a real love for 90/80's movies .

Print - Older, Traditional Audiences perhaps C-D audiences who may read newspapers or magazines daily or monthly due to their loyalty to the magazine or newspaper - Aiming to appeal to them by giving strong critical reviews of movies for example in Super 8 - Newspaper Article in - The guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/aug/04/super-8-review ..Gives it 3 Stars and starts of saying "JJ Abrams's amiable, ever so slightly disappointing mystery adventure is a weird hybrid"
It doesn't allow interaction as it attracts narrow casted audiences who may only want to read about the movie rather than having an opinion on it or wanting to comment back.
The audiences dont really have a role in construction unless the people who write or critic the review actually go to watch the movie or interview with the cast / director .

Broadcasting can reach a more primetime / family audiences therefore - C-D-E socio classes and reach their primary audiences easily as the trailers and tv spots would mostly come in primetimes or between more younger-children based programs or tv shows . However it can also reach out of primary auduiences such as at  the SuperBowl TV recording their was a TV spot during the break making the movie be seen by all american audiences because the Super Bowl has frequently been the most watched American television broadcast of the year
Broadcasting
Emedia can reach worldwide audiences - and primary audeicnes aimed probably at more young teens who are the more daily and  current users of the internet : we see this through the super 8 movie twitter page which has over 16,000 followers , the social networking allows audiences to interact and communicate with what is going on with the updates for the movie,. Moreover just as others it cn reach secondary audiences of general internet users who may see the product on online shopping websites such as amazon.com which may just come up in the corner side whilst you are shopping as seen on the right
<-----
This can also allow audiences to participate with movie info as amazon allows reviews by the buyers therefore audiences can have a say an opinion on the movie and its DVDformat.
The socio class would be around D-E due to the younger internet audiences who are mostly influenced by the promotional methods through the E-Media platform.

OUESTION 4:
How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?Character Represention
Print -
It is harder to control character representation as the person constructing the magazine article or newspaper article has more control over anyone to protray and represent certin characters/actors in certin ways
Broadcast Interviews such as :   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWTHM6CzPlc&feature=related allow the characters to represent themselves rather than having others having mis-represented ideas of them, they are able to present their own individual characters the way they want throught broadcast media as they themselves are the ones communicating their character to the rest of the world/audience .
Emedia this can be tricky as it includes audience interaction and construction therefor the audience have a role in constructing character representationsin things such as blogs or youtube videos, comments etc however E-media also helps with social networks as each character/ actor can once again like broadcast media construct and potray themselves the way they want to audiences throught there networking sites. http://www.facebook.com/JoelCourtneyOfficial
However EMedia allows audiences to represent themselves and their own opinions and comments on the movie itself letting audience feel part of the movie promotion/basis.

QUESTION 5 : What institutional issues are raised in the case study?
Key Institutions + Collaborators/Distributers are :
Paramount, Amblin Entertainment, Love Film ,HMV, Play.com , Amazon, Blockbuster etc.
The main institution Paramount revealed the film to their social networking audience .They tried use Twitter to promote a sneak screening of the film on 300 screens (many of them Imax) .Paramount paid for the promoted hashtag when there was already enough hype about the move they secretly paid and planned for more . This raises questions of Paramount of how far they go to promote? whether they have taken it too far ? or if it is just unfair?
There were also 2 other production companies involved in the making of Super 8, which are Amblin Entertainment and Bad Robot. There were also many distributors which can be seen on the following link. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1650062/companycredits

Eleven, Inc. will award one of its most unusual prizes ever – a trip to space – as part of its super month-long promotion with Paramount Pictures’ film Super 8, released in theaters June 10.   It provides new audience experiences as the audience can stay interactive and are involved in the contest  .

The actors/stars (their star persona) - All seem intreseted deeply into previous Spielburg movies and are very excited and happy about being in sucha high budget blockbuster movie
  • People (race, gender, age etc) - All stars in the movie are white/american theirfore it stick to the norm of a white male protagonist/s , as for age all the star characters are all of a younger age giving more recognition of the younger audience and making it easier to identify with younger audiences
  • Places (countries, regions, the USA etc) - The Movie is set in USA - America Ohio Town - Shows it is the main place for action and discovery aswell as the cure to all problems of distruction as it can help protect the whole world
  • Values and ideologies (class, politics, religion, lifestyle, beliefs etc)  - Shows people of low class/ lifestyle or bad family relations/problems can still enjoy life , survive problems and show that they can still have a norm in society regardless of there demographics.

aswell as showing technological developments to provide new audience experiences
Has internet piracy impacted on the construction/distribution of the film/DVD:
Piracy and Illegal downloading has become a huge problem in todays day and age and for promoters/distributers as E-media/ internet has spread hugely allowing millions of illegal online websites to download and watch movies for free for example websites such as :
http://www.iwannawatch.net/2011/06/super-8-2011/ This is a huge loss into the film industry and shows how media platforms help with this corruption and problem in todays society

Paramount is using Twitter to promote a sneak screening of the film on 300 screens (many of them Imax) throughout the country.
Paramount paid for the promoted hashtag so it appears on the Twitter home page (when users actually use Twitter as opposed to a third party Twitter client). That leads fans to this website where they can buy tickets for the June 9th sneak previews.
The marketing campaign for the movie has been completely built on mystery.

Viral marketing campaign
The first trailer for the movie was attached to Iron Man 2, released in May 2010. The trailer gave the premise of a section of Area 51 being closed down in 1979 and its contents being transported by freight train to Ohio. A pickup truck drives into the oncoming train, derailing it, and one of the carriages is smashed open while a Super 8 camera films. Fans analyzing the trailer found a hidden message, "Scariest Thing I Ever Saw", contained in the final frames of the trailer. This led to a website, http://www.scariestthingieversaw.com/ which simulated an old computer and contained various clues to the film's storyline (the computer was eventually revealed to belong to Josh Woodward, the son of Dr. Woodward, who is trying to find out what happened to his father).
The viral campaign generated massive hype for the film long before its release

Lighting HW

The image is an example of backlighting this is when light comes from the back of the person/object and creates a silhouette. This is a clever way of identifying the people by their shape and outline rather than features. It does require great detail and hides the person’s identity. There is also low key lighting as it produces contrast of the light coming from in front to their shadows. The light coming from in front of them connotes hope and dreams of a new beginning and as they are facing it we can suggest they are turning to the light to enter a new "world" and in this case we can see that the light is coming from Disney Land which to younger audience may be seen as a whole new imaginary world.

YouTube- Titanic - I'm Flying Scene

The film clip is from Titanic – the scene where they are on the boat and feel as if they are flying, this shot has top lighting in this case suggesting that it is coming from the sun, it helps the actors look more glamorous and allows them to look more dominant and superior supported by their body positions. There is also high key lighting to depict a sunny day to bring across a positive atmosphere, there is less contrast as it want to portray happiness and hopefulness with the symbol of light. This is supported by the fact that they feel as if they are flying and in a whole new world. Unlike backlighting it doesn’t hide the characters details or identity but wants to emphasis it to its full extent by showing off the actors who are involved. The lighting also helps us recognise them to be the protagonists - hero/heroine in the movie as the lighting helps convey their importance. In this scene the lighting helps convey the new beginning, hopefulness and romance.

Super 8 Film Review

Super8 is a sci-fi / thriller and follows the storyline of a alien invasion even though the alien looks quite robotic and transformer like. The movie follows todrovs narrative structure with the equilibrium of the kids making a movie then distruption of the alien and back to a new equilibrium. However it can be said that the plot was dragged on too long so the ending and attempt to repair the distruption was rushed plus we also didn't get to find out some of the aspects that occured in the movie e.g the missing dogs? Ps regarding the plot if you were actually keen on the storyline of the whole kids movie making aspect remember to stay for the credits as I guess Abrams couldn't fit it in the movie .it quite a shame as i, myself didnt get to watch the credits .
There were no famous or well known actors which make it easier for audience to identify with as they seem more realistic and not just famous hollywood stars.
The one thing that kept people antsipated is the appearance of the alien/ monster. The director J.J Abrams used a clever trick simmilarly used in his other produced movie, Cloverfield by saving the monster till towards the end of the movie. Alongside this we the audience also play a kind of hide and seek game with the monster to find out where he is simmilar to Spielburgs Jurassic Park movies.

This is deffinatly a homage to Spielburg as we see elements of Spielburgs movies and themes e.g the goonies feel of the group of kids, the jurassic park chasing game and etc.
The target audience reaches out far ,even though its a 12A older audiences will find it appealing as they will remember aspects of classic spielburg movies.
The soundtrack is not really played attention to with the enigma of the alien and all the special effects. The best scene of the movie withought a doubt was the train crash as the high budget and effort put into it has to be credited.
Overall a 7/10

Media awards review

Best year 12 media prodution ...(The Outsider) . firstly for a year 12 production it has to be credited for it's video editing and great understanding of their genre. The plot of the innocent school girl who gets raped and then returns to get her revenge may be the typical storyline but the way they had built up the suspense gave it a extra boost. The protaganist of the revenge character who has the mad and insane look to kill was portrayed by having the girl wear grey contacts, long black hair ,evil smile and the ripped old clothing and some sort of weapon to help her. The actress of her role was great as her transformation was unexpected and shocking to audiences. The dim lighting throughout helped with the iconography and the camera shots used in the trailer were greatly thought about I.e when the guy washes his face and looks into the mirror noticing the girl standing behind him was well thought of and practises. Furthermore the sound was also key in making it outstanding as the Scene of when the girl was sitting on the floor and then we hear digetic sound of her screaming made audiences fear her character and see/hear her pain . Overall ***** (10/10)

Best year 13 media production...(Detention).the best thing about the production had to be the original and creative narative of a student teacher affair of which the student gets over obssessive and will do anything to get him all to herself. The story line is the main thing that shocks and anticipates audiences into watching more of it. The actors are again chosen carefullY so that the student is attractive, young, and appealing to the male gaze .however we then see the other side to her which shocks us. The setting for the production is again cleverly planned with the typical student teacher locations . Another key factor of the production which probably still is why it is so remembered is the scene of the teachers wife being dragged from beneath a table, and her piercing scream . However this may have been cleverly though of however the concept seems very similar to paranormal activity where the very same thing happens. That us probably an e.b.I. Moreover camera shots were fabulous i.e the student watching the wife outside the window whilst shes washing dishes is again cleverly shot and planned. Overall *** (8/10)
